There two main reasons why some birds "dust" bath. Dust absorbs access oils and helps to maintain their feathers. Secondly, it helps to rid them of parasites.
Saw them doing this in the sand on small beach in front of my house today. A quick dip in the edge of the water first, then a snuggle down in warm sand. It gets rid of parasites.
Why would it choose sand and not water to bathe in?
